Toronto Association for Democracy in China (TADC) expresses outrage today at the heavy prison sentences handed down to Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan and Albert Ho, co-defendants on the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (HK Alliance) trial.

On August 21, 2026, the leaders of the since disbanded HK Alliance were found guilty of “inciting subversion of state power” under the 2020 National Security Law (NSL). Their call to “end one-party dictatorship” was deemed to be a NSL crime of serious nature.

Chow Hang-tung, vice-chair and a barrister, defended herself and repeatedly pointed out during the trial how absurd and against legal principles the prosecutor’s case was. As she put it to the three designated NSL judges: asking for justice and democracy is not a crime. “For all we have done, we should not have been in prison for even a single day.”

The court sentenced her to seven years and three months with consideration of extended trial delay.

Lee Cheuk-yan, chair of the alliance at the time of disbandment, had his sentence reduced to seven years due to his 20 years of public services.

Former chair Albert Ho, who has been fighting lung cancer since 2017, pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trial in exchange for a reduction on his sentence. He was handed five years and two months’ imprisonment, of which he still needs to serve one and a half years.

“Ending one-party dictatorship, building a democratic China” has been the slogan of the HK Alliance since its founding in 1989. Undoubtedly, the Hong Kong government is using the national security law as a tool to silence citizens’ right to dissent.

The HK Alliance has held annual candlelight vigils to commemorate the Tiananmen Massacre. For thirty years until 2020, these are the largest such memorial around the world with tens of thousands of Hongkongers attending each year.

The guilty verdict rendered earlier to HK Alliance and its leaders effectively criminalizes all Hongkongers in their demand for justice for the victims of the massacre.

“If doing so makes me a criminal for life, if the law truly cannot accommodate our belief, then I would rather be a criminal than a person who betrays their conscience,” said Chow in her mitigation. “I will stand with all the people of Hong Kong who refuse to give up, and we will continue on this unfinished path to democracy.”

TADC has always stood by HK Alliance and has organized annual commemorative candlelight vigils in Toronto until today. We vow to never forget Tiananmen Massacre and ask that you stand with us in solidarity, to continue calling for the release of Chow, Lee and Ho, together with all political prisoners in Hong Kong.
