Toronto Association for Democracy in China (TADC) strongly condemns the guilty verdict in the landmark trial of Jimmy Lai.
“There has been a severe degradation of media freedom and freedom of speech in Hong Kong,” said Cheuk Kwan, the association’s co-chair. “Lai’s trial is a prime example of the government’s heavy-handed approach to silence dissenting voices.”
Lai, businessman and founder of the popular Apple Daily, was found guilty on all charges, including collusion with foreign forces and sedition. His trial is the most high-profile case since Hong Kong’s National Security Law took effect on July 1, 2020. The law has basically outlawed any act of dissent.
In rendering the guilty verdict, one of the three government hand-picked judges, Esther Toh, said that there is “no doubt” that Jimmy Lai “harboured hatred” for the People’s Republic of China.
“It’s outrageous that such upstanding citizen like Jimmy Lai has now been reduced to a ‘criminal’,” said Liane Lee, vice-chair. “The promise by China to maintain ‘one country two systems’ is now but a shattered dream.”
Seventy-eight-year-old Lai has been held in prison since December 2020, often in solitary confinement for extended periods. He is in ill-health and his family fears that he will not survive his imprisonment.
“The guilty verdict clearly illustrates the total collapse of the rule of law and the proud tradition of judicial independence in Hong Kong,” Kwan said. “We call on the world to continue to fight for freedom in Hong Kong.”

多倫多支聯會（TADC）強烈譴責在這宗具有標誌性的國安審訊中對黎智英作出有罪裁決。
本會共同主席關卓中（Cheuk Kwan）表示：「香港的新聞自由和言論自由已遭到嚴重侵蝕，黎智英的審判正是政府使用高壓打擊異見聲音的典型例子。」
黎智英為一名白手興家的企業家，創辦了廣受歡迎的《蘋果日報》。他在這埸自2020年7月1日《國家安全法》在香港生效以來最具代表性的審訊中，被判勾結外國勢力及煽動罪的所有罪名成立。港區國安法基本上已經將任何形式的異議定為非法。
三名由政府挑選的國安法指定法官作出這個有罪裁決，其中一位法官杜麗冰（Esther Toh）宣讀判詞時把黎智英描繪為對中華人民共和國「心懷怨恨」。
副主席李蘭菊（Liane Lee）說：「一位如此堅強正直的公民如今竟被貶為『罪犯』，實在令人憤慨。中國承諾的『一國兩制』只是眾人痴心妄想的一紙空談。」
現年七十八歲的黎智英自2020年12月起一直被關押，且經常被長時間單獨囚禁。由於他的健康每況愈下，家人擔憂他不能生存至刑滿出獄。
關卓中續稱：「這項有罪裁決清楚顯示香港的法治制度已經徹底崩潰，司法獨立的金漆招牌已經打碎。我們呼籲全世界繼續為香港的自由而奮鬥發聲。」
